Lawn Problems
All lawns undoubtedly will suffer some lawn problems over the years.
A good maintenance programme with correct feeding and weed control will help to keep most problems at bay. Unfortunately, conditions vary from lawn to lawn and in some instances, problems will arise due to dry or wet conditions. Overly shaded sites and poor soil quality can also encourage problems.

The activity of these insects will create small earth mounds on lawns which could result in damage to grass roots and a dried out appearance on the lawn. |
There is no way of fully eradicating this problem. Repeated raking of the mounds on dry days will reduce insect activity and encourage them to move on. |

These grubs will cause damage to plant roots which will in turn weaken and discolour the lawn. They are also the favoured food of birds and small mammals which in turn will also cause lawn disturbance and damage. |
Regular lawn treatment and maintenance will greatly reduce this problem. |
These problems generally develop during cold wet winter periods. Usually associated with meadow grasses the appearance is recognizable by reddish or pink areas on the lawn which will turn to yellow / brown. |
Intensive regular lawn treatments will improve these conditions and use of nitrogen rich fertilizers and aeration to reduce compaction will also discourage the disease. Fungicides are also very effective to remove the problem. |

Most noticeable after warm humid conditions.Identified by yellowing or straw coloured grass patches.(Thatch fungi will also have a musty smell) |
Treatment in this case will need feeds of iron/sulphate and nitrogen and if necessary use of a fungicide. |
This Fungi could present itself all year round and is easily identified by rings of yellow grass with darker green centres. This condition prefers warm soil temperatures and organic matter content. |
This problem is generally tolerated but can be masked with nitrogen / iron fertilizers. |
All types of Moss and Lichen thrive on damp shady, poorly drained lawns. |
Aeration and Moss treatments and regular scarification are a must to control these problems. |
This problem will cause scorch marks on the grass especially during dry weather. |
There is no way to prevent this problem other than to keep your dogs off of the lawn. |
Bare or shaved patches often occurring on edges of lawn or on bumpy uneven lawns. |
This is a familiar problem which can be improved by raising the cutting height of the mower and avoiding putting downward pressure on the handle. |
Broad or narrow bands of short and long grass, may be caused by mowing when it is too wet or by always mowing in the same direction. |
Try to cut the lawn more often before it becomes too long. Avoid cutting when the grass is too wet. Top dressing will help to reduce uneven surfaces. |
This can be caused by a number of reasons and can be recognized by the grass looking bruised. |
It is advisable to have your lawnmower serviced regularly and the blades sharpened. |
Lawn Treatment News
Earlier this year we have been extremely busy with lawn scarifies as the damp Winter was ideal for the spread of moss. There is also another window for these works in the Autumn. If you have any queries or lawn problems we are happy to give free advice.Just give us a call or drop us an e-mail. We look forward to hearing from you.
Have you prepared your lawns for the Winter?
Don’t forget that lawns need attention too.We take time to store and wrap tender plants but this cannot be done for our lawns. It is therefore important that we do what we can to prepare them for the coming year.
Kent and Sussex Lawns recommend aerations during November and December to ensure that the ground is able to cope with whatever the Winter weather has in store.
It is also a good time to treat mossy areas to avoid it spreading through the colder months. If you are still cutting your lawns…remember to raise the height of the cut to protect the grass from frost.
Have you cleared the leaves from the lawn? This is very beneficial to the health of the grass not to mention good exercise!!
Once all these jobs are done you can settle back and wait for the warmer weather and a lovely green lawn next year.
